Many applications fail not because the work is weak, but because the text and images don’t tell the same story. Here’s a simple reusable structure.
1) Artist statement (100–150 words)
Structure:
- What you do (medium + theme)
- Why (research/question)
- How (process/materials)
- Impact (viewer experience)
Copy-ready template
My work explores [theme] through [medium]. I investigate [question/obsession] using [process/materials]. I’m drawn to the tension between [A] and [B]. The work develops through [method], often incorporating [signature element]. I aim to create an experience that invites viewers to [reflect/feel/do].
2) Short bio (60–90 words)
Structure:
- where you’re based
- what you do
- 1–2 credits (shows, awards, publications)
- what you’re working on now
Copy-ready template
[Name] is a [medium] artist based in [city]. Their work has been shown in [1–2 contexts]. They have received [award/recognition if any]. They are currently developing [project/series] exploring [theme].
3) Common mistakes
- generic lines (“I explore human emotions”)
- too long vs the requested word count
- statement doesn’t match the submitted images
- too much theory, not enough clarity
Tip: keep two versions (short + medium). It saves a lot of time.
