Photography contests: how to submit strongly

In photography, strong editing and presentation often beat “more photos”.

1) Series vs single image

If you can choose:

  • single: aim for instant impact (an iconic frame)
  • series: aim for narrative consistency (6–12 images that hold together)

Common mistake: 2 strong images + 8 weak ones.

2) Editing: cut until it hurts

Be ruthless. Ask: does this image add meaning, or is it repetition?

3) Captions

  • clarify place/year
  • prevent misunderstandings
  • keep it short

4) Files: follow requirements

  • if they ask for sRGB, don’t send AdobeRGB
  • if they ask for 3000px, don’t send 800px
  • respect max file size

5) Privacy and releases

If recognizable people or private locations appear, check whether a release is needed. Not always required, but ignoring it can cause issues.

Tip: keep two ready-to-go packs: one for single images and one for series.
