For organizers: how to write a strong open call

A weak call text doesn’t bring more applicants — it brings confusion. Here’s a copy-ready structure to get better submissions and fewer repetitive questions.

A copy-ready structure

  1. Clear title (what + where + year)
  2. Eligibility
  3. What to submit (formats, number of works, technical requirements)
  4. Fee (if any) and what it covers
  5. Concrete rewards/benefits
  6. Timeline (deadline + results date)
  7. Image rights (clear promotional license)
  8. FAQ (top 5 questions)
  9. Contact + official link

The golden rule

If a smart person reads your call for 60 seconds, they should understand:

  • is it worth it?
  • what do I need to submit?
  • what do I get if selected/winning?

Rights: clarity helps you

In most cases, the cleanest approach is a non-exclusive license to promote the call and showcase results (with credit). Avoid vague or overly aggressive clauses — they reduce applicant quality.
